Best place to live in Nigeria..

Why? For thousands of Nigerian students every year, the issue isn't their intelligence—it's their Subject Combination.

University admission in Nigeria is a two-part puzzle: Your UTME (JAMB) subjects must match your course, and your O’Level (WAEC/NECO/GCE) results must back them up. If these don't align with the requirements for your specific course, even a score of 300+ won't get you in.

Here is how to ensure your combo is perfect before you buy that form.

1. The "Big 4" Rules

Every course has a specific "Big 4" requirement for JAMB. English Language is compulsory for everyone, but the other three must relate to your field.

  • Medicine & Surgery: English + Physics, Chemistry, Biology. (Math is usually not required in JAMB for Medicine, though some schools vary).

  • Engineering: English + Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry.

  • Mass Communication/Law: English + Literature in English, and two Arts/Social Science subjects (like Government or CRK/IRS).

  • Computer Science: English + Mathematics, Physics, and one other science subject.

Pro Tip: Never assume. Always check the JAMB Brochure for the specific university you want to attend. Some private universities have slightly different requirements than federal ones.

2. The "Credit" Trap (O’Level)

Your WAEC or NECO result is the foundation. Most universities require 5 Credits in strictly relevant subjects (including Mathematics and English) in not more than two sittings.

  • D7 or E8 is NOT a Credit. If you have a D7 in Mathematics and you want to study Accounting, you cannot use that result.

  • The "Awaiting Result" Strategy: You can register for JAMB with "Awaiting Result" if you are currently writing WAEC/NECO, but you must upload the credits to the JAMB portal immediately after they are released to be considered for admission.

3. Direct Entry vs. UTME

If you messed up your subject combo in secondary school, all is not lost.

  • Correction: You can take the GCE (Private) exams to fix specific subjects.

  • IJMB/JUPEB: These are A-Level programs that allow you to gain admission into 200 Level directly, often bypassing some of the strict JAMB subject combo headaches, provided you pass the A-Level exams.

The Bottom Line: Don't guess. Before you register, visit the official JAMB IBASS (Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System) portal. Confirm your four subjects. It’s better to spend 30 minutes researching now than to waste a whole year at home.
